The collaboration of AMSE and ASIIN
The Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Mathematics “(ASIIN), Düsseldorf has founded the Technical Committee 14 – Medicine in cooperation with the Alliance of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE). The constituent meeting of the newly founded expert committee took place in Düsseldorf on 3 September 2019.
ASIIN is a nationally and internationally renowned specialist agency for the accreditation of study programs in the fields of natural sciences, mathematics, computer science as well as engineering and economics.
AMSE creates a forum for Faculties of Medicine in Europe to exchange experiences in education, research and management. AMSE seeks to foster collaboration between European Medical Faculties and to initiate and sustain relationships with other professional, governmental and non-governmental organizations in the education, research and health sectors.
The
aim of the cooperation with AMSE is firstly to establish uniform high
quality standards in increasingly heterogeneous medical study courses
and secondly to support the medical faculties in the recognition of
their graduates by the US Educational Commission for Foreign Medical
Graduates (ECFMG). This recognition is necessary so that graduates of
these faculties can continue to apply for specialist medical training
in the USA beyond 2023. Discussions with ECFMG are currently being
initiated with this aim in mind.
Last year, ASIIN entered into a
cooperation with AMSE, and between January and June 2019, a total of
6 pilot accreditation procedures were conducted at Medical Faculties
in Europe:
- Sechenov University Moscow (Russia)
- University of Malta (Malta)
- Faculty of Medicine, University of Belgrade (Serbia)
- University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca (Romania)
- David Tvildiani Medical University of Tbilisi (Georgia)
- Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Palacky University Olomouc (Czech Republic)
The very thorough procedures were conducted using the ASIIN Program Accreditation Standards (in accordance with the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) and incorporating the criteria of the WFME Standards for Undergraduate Education The AMSE / ASIIN expert group, comprising scientists, students and practitioners, evaluated the Medical Faculties.
