Standards for the PhD degree in biomedicine in Europe

AMSE is very pleased to have been a partner with WFME and ORPHEUS (the Organisation for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences in the European System) in developing the ORPHEUS position paper “Towards Standards for PhD Education in Biomedicine and Health Sciences” into a set of standards agreed by all three organisations. The agreed standards can be read here.

2011

Ljubljana Declaration - 18 June 2011 

The Ljubljana Annual Conference, 2011, agreed a Declaration on staffing issues in the medical school. In particular, the Conference agreed that "… disparity ... between salaries and conditions of work for clinical staff of the medical school and salaries and conditions that are available for their colleagues in the health care system is not tolerable".

 The Declaration concludes "the recruitment, reward and retention of medical school clinical academic staff requires:

• Adequate and protected time for teaching, research, clinical activities and for personal development. This timetable should be tailored to the talent of the individual, and annually monitored and discussed

• Equitable conditions of employment and reward, related to the plan of work and performance of the individual academic

• A supportive, well-resourced academic and clinical environment

2010

Bologna Process

The Policy of AMSE on the Bologna Process and medical education was agreed at the General Assembly of the Association in June 2010 in Berlin, and can be read here.

2009

Zagreb Declaration - 6 June 2009

The Zagreb Annual Conference, 2009, agreed this statement on the role of the medical school in postgraduate education.  "... the medical school has responsibility in all aspects of postgraduate clinical, specialist and research education.  It must work with its partners in order to promote quality in postgraduate work, and excellence in the future of medical research, education and care."

2008

Barcelona Declaration - 7 June 2008

This was the consensus statement issued by AMSE at the end of the 2008 Annual Conference, on important issues in Quality Assurance in medical schools, and on actions recommended by AMSE.

 

2007

Lisbon Declaration - 16 June 2007

A position paper from the Association of Medical Schools in Europe (AMSE) on the relationship between Medical Schools and the health systems in which they operate across Europe.

MEDINE Quality Assurance Task Force - published May 2007

AMSE and the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) jointly led the quality assurance task force of MEDINE, the European Union-funded thematic network in medicine.  The task force developed European specifications to the already well-established WFME global quality assurance standards, which can be read here.
